We decided to put our winter wear collection to the test in deep winter this January. After considering both cost and travel time, we chose Harbin as our destination.
Harbin is well known for its harsh winter temperatures, which can drop to as low as –30°C. It is also a favourite destination for travellers who want to experience the Ice and Snow Festival, a spectacular event that takes place only three months a year during the winter season.
We flew with China Eastern Airlines on a red-eye flight, transiting in Shanghai for a two-hour immigration clearance. We arrived in Harbin at around 10 a.m. and were picked up by a private transfer to our hotel.
For our four-night stay, we chose Mercure St Sophia Cathedral due to its central location—just a five-minute walk from the iconic St Sophia Cathedral and Zhongyang Central Street.
Our agenda for Day 1 was simple: visiting St Sophia Cathedral and taking a stroll along Zhongyang Central Street at night.
The temperature was around –17°C. Thank God our outfits kept us warm—perhaps even too warm. With three layers on, we actually had to remove our mid-layer when we stopped by McDonald’s.
We’re not big foodies, so instead of a full meal, we decided to sample different street foods along Zhongyang Central Street. From beef skewers and Madier ice cream to chimney bread, we were pleasantly full by the end of the night.
